AI for In-House Legal Teams
In-house legal is a different job: high contract volume, a small fixed team, no billable hour to soften the load. This 45-minute course shows in-house teams how to triage what genuinely needs a lawyer, build playbooks and templates that scale, manage external firms and vendors in the AI era, and do more without adding headcount. Four assessed units.

What your team will learn
Upon course completion, employees will gain a full and clear understanding of:
- Why in-house legal work is structurally different from private practice, and what that means for how a small team should operate
- How to triage incoming requests, distinguishing what genuinely needs a qualified lawyer from what a playbook, template or safe self-service tool can handle
- How to build and maintain playbooks and templates that let a small team apply consistent judgement at volume, including contract triage as a repeatable process
- What to ask external law firms about their AI policy, confidentiality practice around client matters, and whether efficiency gains are reflected in billing
- What to ask when procuring AI tools directly for an in-house team, distinct from a law firm's own internal procurement
- How to prioritise by actual risk, protect professional judgement and accountability in a self-service world, and build a personal and team action plan for doing more without more headcount
Who it is for
Written for legal. No technical background is needed, and nothing in it assumes a previous course.
This course from Blocknorth gives in-house legal teams a practical, honest look at working with AI inside a genuinely different job: high contract volume, a small fixed team, and no billable hour to soften the workload. You'll learn to triage what actually needs a lawyer, build playbooks and templates that scale, manage the external law firms and vendors you work with, and do more without needing more headcount.
Course contents
4 units. Each ends with a 10-question quiz; 8 correct unlocks the next unit.
A Different World: High Volume, Small Team
- Why in-house legal work is structurally different from private practice: unlimited demand against a fixed headcount, with no billable hour to absorb the gap
- The pace of in-house AI adoption, and what it means for a small team
- Triaging what genuinely needs a qualified lawyer, and business partnering as the core in-house skill
- Safe self-service for colleagues in sales, procurement and HR
Playbooks, Templates and Scale
- How a small team turns individual judgement into a system it can apply consistently at volume
- What a playbook is and how it differs from a template, and AI's role in applying, not inventing, an organisation's position
- Contract triage at volume as a repeatable process, with explicit escalation thresholds
- Keeping consistency across a large, distributed organisation
Managing Outside Counsel in the AI Era
- What to actually ask the external law firms who are increasingly using AI themselves, often without telling their clients
- Questions on AI policy, confidentiality practice and billing
- Practical ways to audit a firm's AI use through outside counsel guidelines
- A separate set of vendor and procurement questions for AI tools bought directly for an in-house team
Doing More Without More Headcount
- Where AI genuinely creates capacity in an in-house team, and where it only feels like it does
- Prioritising by actual risk rather than stated urgency
- Protecting professional judgement and accountability in a self-service world
- Honestly measuring what's working, closing with a practical personal and team action plan
