What your team will learn
Upon course completion, employees will gain a full and clear understanding of:
- How to explain what accessible content means for a content or marketing role, and the legal backdrop in brief, including the European Accessibility Act, the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines and UK law
- How to write and structure content accessibly: plain language, sentence structure, headings and descriptive links
- How to make images and colour accessible: writing good alt text and meeting colour contrast standards
- How to make video, PDFs and email accessible: captions, transcripts and properly structured documents
- How to brief designers and agencies, and run a quick pre-publish accessibility check
- How to build accessibility into an everyday content and marketing workflow, not treat it as a one-off project
Who it is for
Written for sales and marketing. No technical background is needed, and nothing in it assumes a previous course.
This course from Blocknorth teaches content and marketing teams to write, design and publish accessible content as a matter of course, alt text, colour contrast, headings, captions and plain language, not as a specialist afterthought. It also explains, as general awareness training, why accessibility is now a compliance issue as well as good practice.
Course contents
4 units. Each ends with a 10-question quiz; 8 correct unlocks the next unit.
Why This Matters for Content and Marketing Teams
- What accessible content actually means for a content or marketing role, and who benefits, permanently, temporarily and situationally
- The business case for accessible content, beyond compliance
- The European Accessibility Act: scope, timing and the micro-enterprise exemption
- The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines, the harmonised European standard, and UK law (the Equality Act 2010 and public sector accessibility regulations)
Writing and Structuring Accessible Content
- Plain language, and sentence and paragraph structure that is easy to follow
- Headings as navigation, not decoration, and why the order matters
- Descriptive link text, and the classic "click here" problem
- Lists, tables, formatting, scannability and a simple self-check habit before publishing
Accessible Media
- Writing alt text for simple and complex images
- Colour contrast basics, and not relying on colour alone to carry meaning
- Video captions and transcripts, including for short social clips
- Accessible PDFs and accessible email
Building It Into the Workflow
- Briefing designers and agencies so accessibility is built in from the start
- A quick pre-publish checklist, and simple tools that support, not replace, human judgement
- Keeping pace as standards evolve, and why accessibility works best as a shared habit
- Handling a complaint constructively, measuring progress, and your own action plan
